The UK Gambling Commission has reached a £900,000 settlement with Betfred operator Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, following an investigation that found weaknesses in how the company identified and supported customers showing signs of gambling-related harm.
The case serves as another reminder that effective safer gambling measures rely not only on monitoring player behaviour but also on acting quickly when risk indicators appear.
Delayed Interventions Became a Key Concern
The Commission found that Betfred’s automated monitoring systems were not robust enough to consistently identify customers whose gambling activity suggested potential harm. Spending levels, gambling patterns and time spent playing were not always monitored effectively, while stronger indicators of harm did not always trigger immediate automated interventions.
Regulators also identified a significant flaw in the review process. Once a customer had been flagged for a safer gambling assessment, the system prevented another review from being triggered for seven days, even if further concerning behaviour emerged. In one example highlighted by the Commission, a customer lost £17,900 in a single day without receiving another safer gambling interaction after already being flagged.
Commission Urges Operators to Strengthen Player Protection
John Pierce, the Gambling Commission’s Director of Enforcement, said operators should view the case as an important lesson in maintaining effective customer protection systems. He noted that while the failings were unacceptable, Betfred responded quickly by introducing interim safeguards before implementing wider improvements to its operating model.
The £900,000 settlement, alongside the costs of the investigation, closes the regulatory case, but the wider message extends across the gambling industry. As operators increasingly rely on automated technology to identify at-risk customers, regulators continue to expect those systems to detect harmful behaviour promptly and support meaningful interventions before gambling problems escalate.
Betfred said it cooperated fully with the investigation and has since strengthened its safer gambling framework, reaffirming its commitment to providing a safer gambling environment for its customers.
